Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line (“Carnival”) was originally an independent company founded in 1972 by Ted Arison. The maiden voyage of Carnival Cruise Line first ship, the TSS Mardi Gras, unfortunately ran aground on sandbar outside its home port of Miami. The mishap did not deter Carnival from entering the cruise industry as a key player, and with a series of ship acquisitions, innovations and industry firsts, Carnival bolstered their fleet almost launching a new ship almost every year since 1985.
With the shipping boom of the early 1980’s underway, Carnival saw room in the market to attract family, younger and first time cruisers, in a bold move they became the first cruise line to advertise on U.S. network television in 1984, offering three day cruises for just over $300 (£198). The advert is available for nostalgic viewing courtesy of YouTube “Carnival Cruise Line” (Broadcast October 1985).
Only recently, as early as January 2013 have Carnival Cruise Line begun to broadcast advertisements on U.K. television channels, once again broadening their audience of potential cruise passengers.
The company is now one of ten cruise ship brands owned by Carnival Corporation & plc, together these brands dominate a 21% share of the worldwide cruise industry market. Carnival Cruise Line is the flagship and largest of the brands with a total of 26 vessels in operation.
